I read "Years" by LaVyrle Spencer 20 years ago as a teenager and knew, even then, it was a well-written, character-rich story. Twenty years later and I'm not only older, but also in a different stage in life and I enjoyed it even more on this reread. It's one of my favorite historical romances ever.

It's rare when an author can depict every day life in a historical time so accurately, and yet make it so engrossing and engaging at the same time. Our two main characters, Linnea and Teddy, are so well-developed along with a plot that not only tells the story of their slow-burn romance, but also masterfully shows how strong the bonds of family and community are. This is a World World One-era story and while we don't see war conflict or battle here, we do see how war touches this small farming community through the farming of wheat and the loss of it's young men to the battlefield. Times are changing in the US at this time and, as readers, we see this underlying theme through the different generations represented in this story. Also, the imagery in this book is amazing. You can feel the sunrise over the fields of wheat, see the wild horses running across the snow covered plains and hear the school bell from Linnea's schoolhouse ring to call the children to school.

The title of this book, "Years," is so simple, yet it's a word that fits the entire story. There is a 16-year age difference between Teddy and Linnea. Linnea is a young, determined and fresh-faced school teacher who is ready to go out into the world and make a difference. Teddy is a broody wheat farmer and father to a 16-year-old boy who has been scorned by his former wife and wants nothing to do with women ever - and he's a bit set in his ways. These two seem like the most unlikely pair, but as they turn from enemies into friends, the reader sees their underlying need for one another not only physically, but emotionally as well. I can truly say that watching the progression of Teddy into a more forward-thinking and accepting man was a beautiful experience.

“Oh, Teddy, you have an obsession with years. You’re forever counting them. But don’t you see it’s more important to count happiness? Why, even in twenty years we could have more happiness than some people have in fifty."

The secondary characters are just as wonderful and interesting. I enjoyed seeing Teddy's son, Kristian, grow into a man; Nissa, Teddy's mother, take control of every situation and listen to her Norwegian stories of her homeland; Isabelle Lawler, the hired-hand cook, tell her bawdy jokes; and Clara, Teddy's sister, tell Linnea secrets from the marriage bedroom before her wedding.

This is a tender, heartfelt and gripping romance. It's highly emotional and the slow-burn had me spellbound from the beginning. Ms. Spencer makes you FEEL all of the emotions in this story from the love, to the loss, to the hope. A truly well-written gem. It's loving, bittersweet and hopeful all at once. If you love historical romances set in the US, slow-burn romances (Boy, does Teddy fight this romance hard!) and memorable secondary characters, this book if for you. I guarantee you will hug your Kindle when you finish and perhaps shed a tear or two.

One of the best books I have ever read. I couldn't function for two days as I spent every free moment I had reading this book and every moment that I was not reading it, thinking about it. There is nothing I hate more than a romance novel where the protagonists have known each other for a nano second and yet we are supposed to believe that they are madly in love. What I loved about this, was how gradually their relationship developed. When I started the book, I could not see any way that Linnea and Teddy could get together. There was just so much antagonism and dislike at the beginning that by the time their feelings start to develop, you know that this is the real thing. I loved that Teddy tried his level best to do -according to him-what he thought was best for Linnea, but in the end their love won out. Linnea was all I love in a heroine; strong, mature, level headed and determined. They were truly a perfect match Thank you Lavyrle for this gem.
Absolutely loved this book - I know it will stick with me for quite some time. I'm from South Dakota so a book about North Dakota and the extreme Prairie Winters and the people making a living in this environment in 1918 strikes a chord with me - her account of a Blizzard has me mesmerized. This is a simple, yet non-idyllic story - a story of a tough life and a couple, Linnea and Teddy - who help define a time of people with honor, courage and character - and I knew, after reading LaVyrle's Story Morning Glory, that I would love this. I have 2 more of her books waiting in the wings and (please) provide more than the FEW Audible has that are Unabridged. I really hate Abridged, it simply guts the story too often.

There's so many reasons I loved this book. First off this book historically accurate. Lavyrle paints a picture with her writing that sets you in a place and where you feel as if you have stepped back in time yourself. Her characters you can't help but love.

Linnea and Teddy's story has a lot of ups and downs. There's just so much going on in the world for these two that you never think they will get together. It's a must read.

Lavyrle Spencer is one of my all time favorite historical writers of romance.
I finished Years a week ago, and I am still thinking about it. I had to give it at least a 4 for that reason alone. Some of the things I enjoyed about the book
It is a great historical fiction book and does a nice job of describing everyday life of farmers in that time period.
I like the premise of a young city girl taking her first job in the country and an unlikely romance with an older man.
Good character development - you really got a good feeling for the main characters.
I tend to prefer more of a clean romance but this one wasn't too bad. There is really only one chapter with something and it was done in a tasteful way. It didn't scream bodice ripper.

What I did not care for (some slight spoilers ahead)

The end was dark. After the characters came together, the book continued for awhile. Most of what happens is pretty depressing - both in general (war, flu, storms) and between the two main characters (fighting.) I suppose I prefer books to end with the characters coming together with maybe a final chapter or prologue. It makes it feel like more of a happy ending. It was the problems between the two main characters that bothered me the most. They have a couple major disagreements at the end, and I didn't care for the resolution.

Overall, it is worth reading. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others. It just was not my favorite. I read another book last week called Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand (crazy title) and it was awesome. Unfortunately, I compared Years to that one and it could not measure up.
