Runner Sam Dryden Patrick Lee 9781250030733 Books Reviews

Sam Dryden is on a late night walk on the beach when he encounters a 12 year old girl running from pursuers. He helps her out and together they go on the run, trying to escape from the people who want her dead, and who are using government resources to find her. The premise of the book is a little implausible-- Rachel has an ability to exercise mind control over others-- but it's believable enough to explain the urgency in those who want her dead. This is a fun, fast read, with a satisfying ending.
This was the first book that I have read by Patrick Lee, but it will not be the last. The plot line was inventive and quite different from anything I had read before. The characters were believable and interesting. Even though the plot unfolded at a breakneck pace, I never forgot to care what happened to the main characters. I'm looking forward to reading more of Lee's work
This is one of the best books I've read in a very long time, and I read a lot of books. I was hooked right at the beginning, and I couldn't stop until I reached the end. Other reviews tell you what's going on, so I won't go into details, but if you like suspense this is the book to read. Just don't plan on getting anything else done once you start reading. Great book.
I have to admit, I've really enjoyed all of the Patrick Lee books that I've read so far; so I was going to buy this book no matter what. That being said, when I bought Runner, I thought it was going to be somewhat of a "one trick pony," a little girl can read minds, the government wants to get her...okay, what else can you do with that? However, to my happy surprise, I got much more than I expected. The book is exciting, interesting, thought provoking, at times touching, and filled some unexpected twists and turns. If you like a fun, suspenseful thriller with kind of a X Files meets Jack Reacher feel, then this is your book.
Thanks for the "HeadsUp" on your new book, "Runner.". Had time to download a copy early last evening, so I got a copy from .
Started reading around 600 PM and read non-stop, except to eat and answer nature's call; finished at about 1030 PM.
I realized the good thing about books remains their portability and the fact that you can set them down and then pick them up again "right where you left off.".
Wow! Way too much like our actual Federal Gov't - in the hands of international corporate moguls - maybe - maybe just fiction.
Good work, again, Patrick Lee. When is/will there be movies of any, or all of your books?

This has a lot of good action. The hero Sam does smart and neat things to evade the bad guys. The bad guy has top U.S. powers behind him. He uses spy satellites, helicopters, and soldiers. The bad guy puts notices on all TV channels saying Sam is a terrorist - asking for help from citizens to find Sam.

The problem was each time I stopped reading, I felt kind of empty. I wasn’t emotionally connected. The characters were one dimensional. You need a little bit of good in the bad guy and a little bit of weakness or weirdness in the good guy. Instead everyone had one role and that is all we saw. It felt flat.

I was disappointed in the ending. It was not explained. It left a big hole for me. Technically it was a happy ending for the main characters, but the logic didn’t work. I explain this in my comment after this review. It’s too much of a spoiler to put here.

One part annoyed me, contrived by the author. Rachel has amnesia for a week due to drugs given to her by the bad guys. When she finds people she used to live with they won’t tell her about her past. She’s running for her life and could use that knowledge. They say it’s better for her to learn through her own memory. They aren’t medical people. It was like we know but we aren’t going to tell you. That was annoying. If the author wants to delay Rachel learning about her past, he should not have her see her friends. In the next Rachel scene, she knew everything so it wouldn’t have hurt the plot.

Runner by Patrick Lee was a very good thriller. It starts out with retired special forces Sam Dryden out for a run. He runs into this young girl named Rachel who is running from these men with guns. So he decides to help her. The longer he runs with her the more he learns about her and the people that are chasing her. The deeper he gets into this the harder it is to keep them a live. Over all I enjoyed reading this book. This was the first book I have read by Patrick Lee. Will be reading the second book in the series (Signal) next month. I gave Runner 4 stars.
This book held my interest from beginning to end. When I was close to the end, I misplaced the printed book from my library at my local hospital. I couldn't wait until it was found and decided to purchase the kindle version to finish the reading. I returned the book when found to the library and finished reading with the kindle version. Patrick Lee has the ability to pull you in to the story and leave just enough undisclosed information to pull you back in. Great story and writer. I wish he had more books available. A great read with a satisfactory ending.
