Oh Karen! I never thought it would happen: that first, I wouldn't like a Karen Robards book, but secondly that I couldn't even finish it! I haven't even made it to page 100 and I am stopping. There are run-on sentences about running barefoot across the marble floors, with the pink nails she painted earlier that day--not a direct quote but close enough. I couldn't even make sense of some of them because she added so much content into one sentence. Then there is the thief, who I am supposing has a heart of gold because he's caught by a woman cop with a gun trained on him while he and his partner are stealing 1 million dollars, but when they get into hand-to-hand combat he won't defend himself against her because he can't hit a woman? He could throw a heavy suitcase at her but not throw her off him? Was he supposed to be Robin Hood? The woman is a cop and goes to investigate a sound in the night but puts her flip flops on first--right, great way to sneak up on someone on marble floors not to mention how hard they are to run or maneuver in (yet she manages to run across snow in them while carrying a heavy suitcase) and she apparently has no idea that Uncle Nicco is a bad guy? And why in the beginning of the book were an all female family leaving in a squalor neighborhood if they had a rich uncle? I apparently don't care enough to find out the solution she comes up with for these questions. I have loved Karen for decades, even her not so good books were still good enough to read; this is a mess that I can only hope was an unsold manuscript dragged out to fulfill a deadline or that she has a ghost writer.

I found this book very entertaining. I did have a problem with the Mick (lady cop). I found some of the things she did dumb for a police officer, especially one that grew up with a dad as a police officer. That's why I gave it a 4. If you can ignore some of the stupid moves she makes it a good story. Mick finds Jason robbing her "Uncle's" safe, they fight she sees something she shouldn't they go on the run together. There are a few twist and turns, enough to keep you reading. If you are looking for a red hot romance this may not be for you. Yes there is some romance but not a lot. I recommend Sleepwalker for anyone who wants a nice adventure.
I've been reading Karen Robards off and on for a couple of decades, and it's always a toss-up whether she'll write a keeper or a bomb. Her biggest problem, well in evidence here, is that she'll open with a plot, drop it within a chapter or two, and then go "Oops!" and bring it back into play within the last chapter or thereabouts for a hasty resolution. Her focus for the rest of the book is on the interplay between the hero and heroine. What keeps me reading is that she is a decent writer (or has a decent editor) and there is some sizzle between the protagonists. But this author has a one-track mind, and that one track is what romance chat rooms call "H/h". Hero and heroine. Period. End of story, no matter how bizarre the scenario. Try this the heroine is a police investigator in her twenties, with a slim build and four years on the force. The hero is a thief, tall and muscular, and she suspects he has military training. When they meet, he is burglarizing her uncle's house, and she moves right into hand-to-hand combat and appears to be winning until his accomplice steps in. Yup, a police-trained woman can outfight a military-trained man at close range although he is inches taller and many pounds heavier with, I presume, a lengthier arm-span to match. I can just see it. Then, although it's New Year's Eve and snowing, bitterly cold, with the ground icy and covered with snow, right off Lake Erie with the appropriate winds blowing, and our heroine is only wearing pj bottoms, a tank top and is barefoot, the action moves outdoors, where she stands, runs, and hangs out for an incredible amount of time without succumbing to hypothermia. Ms. Robards can't make up her mind about just how bad the situation is; sometimes she says the heroine fears frostbite, and sometimes she describes actual frostbite, but either way, no harm, no foul. A chase ensues; her uncle's goons are in hot pursuit - or maybe I should say cold pursuit, as the snow turns into an ice storm of sorts - and this goes on for pages upon pages. More than 100 pages, in fact, in which nothing is happening except that the banter between the H/h gets more meaningful, and each begins to think rather longingly of the other, though why a cop should hook up with a burglar escapes me. Maybe Ms. Robards read Nora Roberts' "Homeport", in which a staid and respectable woman falls for an art thief. Anyway, the plot? Remember the plot? Oh, right. "Uncle" Nicco isn't the nice guy Mick thought he was, and for a smart cop, she sure missed the signs, like his squad of low-life security goons. Now she's aligned with the burglar, because it has suddenly hit her that her loving uncle won't have any mercy when he learns what she has realized. Need I say more? If you like Karen Robards, you might want to take this out of the library. If you like a storyline, you can read the first few and last few chapters, skip the entire middle, and not miss a thing. If you are a devoted romance reader, though, who doesn't worry too much about a story hanging together and just wants some body heat, okay, it's a quick read and probably more fun to read during a heat wave, considering all that snow and ice.
Not her best. I had bought this hard copy and never finished it -- and thought maybe i needed to give it another shot on the kindle. I was incorrect. She's such a WONDERFUL author too. She worked very hard to make the heroine tough and a strong fighter. But it always ends up with the vulnerable boo hooing and tears. Sometimes I still miss Marian Ravenwood from Indiana Jones. Her Dr. Charlotte Stone series was AMAZING -- just finished rereading. Go for those!

She goes to investigate and she sees a man in his safe she also sees pictures of her uncle killing a congressman. She helps the guy getaway and goes with him; they are chased by her uncle's security. When they find out Mick is working with the guy, she becomes a threat and has to be killed. Jason is a thief, when he planned on stealing the money he didn't know he was going to be getting pictures of a crime. Now he has to find out how to get away alive and keep Mick from arresting him. The heroine Mick is a cop, yet she doesn't know her uncle is a criminal. I found it really hard to believe that she was supposed to be this super cop, but she was really clueless about a lot of things. Her instincts her bad and she trusted a lot of the wrong people. Jason was a criminal but he was upfront about it and he knew Mick was going to arrest him but he still helped her. His instincts were really good and he was smart and resourceful. The couple had a lot of chemistry and the book was fast paced and entertaining. I did like the book; I just wanted the heroine to be better than she really was.
