Beware, it will be difficult to put this book down once you start reading.
Well written, by an author who knows her stuff. Having read most of her Paksworld books I already knew she's an excellent author; seamlessly blending believable world building, finely drawn characters and rich dialogue with a master hand. That is excellent fantasy and this is excellent science fiction.
In most of her books her primary character is a strong, intelligent female in a non-traditional role and the few that aren't feature them. While often required to stand fast in order to find and hold their place, there is no overt feminism, the characters are simply themselves.
She should be required reading for all young women as they would realize whole world's of choices are open to them they were previously unaware of. They've only to decide, then do. Thank you, Ms. Moon.

Great series, although as the books move along they become more predictable. Vatta is basically a re-do of her Serrano series. Both are great reads, with heroines that are almost clones of each other.
Ms Moon is an excellent, imaginative writer ... the story flow is smooth, her word choice is good, the battle sequences are well thought out and often have startling actions that show Ms Moon's in-depth knowledge of how complex war in space can be. The characters are all likable, believable, and the bad guys are really bad!
OK, moderate amount of space opera action. Lots of Vatta's thoughts but not much development of other characters as has been the case (and probably the intent) for this series.
Moon continues the tale of the Vatta family, as young captain Kylara Vatta fights for her ship, her family, her crew, & for the future of Vatta Transport. Light- speed action & tense plot lines make this a worthy addition to the series.
The book blurb is a good plot description. This series is one of those standard space operas with a classic feel. There are new technology plot features, modern characters, with a comfortable narrative style. I have read these in hardback. I have read these in ebook from my library on Overdrive. They're great rainy-day, flu-day comfort reads.

Elizabeth Moon is one of my favorite authors. I have never picked up one of her books and been disappointed.Marque and Reprisal is the second book in her Vatta's War series and it continues the story line perfectly. There is a fair amount of surprising disclosures and it makes you want to continue the series to see how it will end.
Is the 1st one, this one, and all the rest. I love all of characters, which are completely developed and real. They all work though their relationships and challenges in keeping with their characters. The author is able and keep me totally absorbed even while discussing mondaine activity - let alone action wrenching drama. Elizabeth Moon is definitely one of my favorite authors and I have been reading Sci-fi since the 1950's - enjoy.
As you probably know, this is the 2nd in a series of 5 (Trading in Danger, this, Engaging the Enemy, Command Decision, and Victory Conditions). This one is better than the first. Probably two things changed most importantly I was able to learn to ignore Moon's horrible dialogs. She shows about as much skill at writing dialog as I do - which is virtually none. I don't know how, but I was able to put all of the absurdly clumsy and nonsensical dialog "on the shelf" and enjoy the story despite it. Second, the action picked up and there was less awful neurotic whining by Ky than in the first book. The first ~100 pages were a struggle to slog through, after than it definitely improved. Ky's mistakes continue, she perhaps made MORE in this book than in the first, but at least the mistakes were - mostly - believable ones. Although Ky persists in her (literally) insane self-blame for stuff that was clearly not her responsibility. The books continue to be for younger (read Young Adult) readers. There is a super spy (complete with near miraculous technology and magical hacking skills). There is the stoic but astoundingly agile senior citizen/bodyguard/security wiz. In the first book, Ky got into near fatal trouble TWICE for allowing people onto her ship without carefully vetting/searching/evaluating them. Guess what? Yup, she does it not once, but twice more here. Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me, fool me four times and what can I say? It's starting to get old. Moon doesn't know the difference between velocity and acceleration. Wow. Maybe should should stick with magic and fantasy, such an author has no place creating stories involving spaceflight. In one situation, she keeps velocity low so that the ship will be more maneuverable. And I'm not talking about docking type maneuverability, this is in open space. It's complete rubbish. I understand she was a computer systems person in the Marines, I'm wondering if she had any physical science background... I gave it 4 stars despite all its flaws. It isn't great sci-fi, but I found the story entertaining. (My solution to the horrible dialog was to make a note in pencil at the particularly awful spots). Here's an example As Ky returns to her ship, there's been an incident. The dialog goesCop"Nothing to concern you with, madam. Please stand away." Ky"It's my ship; it concerns me." Cop (looking confused)"Oh. You're not in uniform." This is on a space station! Apparently Moon thinks it's plausible that a cop will struggle with finding a owner or captain of a ship without the proper attire? Wow. Its just lame. A simple "Oh, sorry madam." would have been obvious and painless. Moon goes out of her way to show everyone in the civilian government as bumbling mental incompetents, everyone. Reminds me of the way J.K. Rowling treats (most) adults. I do like the flow of the story, Moon is a much better story board guy than a dialog coach. There continue to be holes in the story big enough to drive a cruise ship though, again with no apparent awareness by the characters, and there continue to be "just so" plot points. (so, maybe her story boarding isn't 1st rate, after all...). When Ky needs a certain "tool" (in the abstract sense) it isn't long before it presents itself to her. Rarely because she went out and made it happen, usually due to the actions of others or just blind luck. And yet to me, Ky ended up becoming a more believable character - and one who almost seems worthy of some of the admiration the author pours on her (via others' comments). By the end of the book, I actually found myself liking/admiring her.
